Cyberpunk
Introduction"Cyberpunk (a portmanteau of cybernetics and punk) is a sub-genre of science fiction ... focusing on advanced technology such as computers or information technology coupled with some degree of breakdown in the social order" (Wikipedia).This genre of fiction explores the possible different futures that might emerge as a result of technological advances in cybernetics. Typically these futures are seen as dystopian, with humans set in opposition against malevolent machines, cyborgs or the organisations that control them. Examples of cyberpunk material include books such as William Gibson’s “Neuromancer” and films like the “Terminator” and “Matrix” trilogies, “Bladerunner” and “iRobot” but the term 'cyberpunk' may also be applied to a wider subculture including music, fashion and gaming. Using fiction as a medium, whether in literature or cinema, the cyberpunk genre is able to explore challenging topics concerning the structure of society and its relationship with technology both now and in the future.
